At the end of the last year I launched my first project at Mnemoscene, a company I co-founded in 2017.  Nomad is a collaboration with Abira Hussein.

Nomad is a Heritage Lottery funded project which premiered at the British Library and British Museum during Somali Week Festival 2018. Based around workshops engaging Somali communities in London, Nomad explores the creative use of HoloLens Mixed Reality and web-based technology to contextualise archival Somali objects with the people and traditions to which they belong. To find out more about the project, please visit our website for the project here

Since October we have toured the experience, held workshops, and delivered presentations at the following events and venues:

Sussex Humanities Lab at Brighton Digital Festival
The Immersive Storytelling Symposium
British Library Labs Awards – runner up in the Artistic Category
Metropolitan Archives London
Lighthouse – The Impossible Future of Immersion

Workshops and demonstrations

British Library
British Museum
Tower Hamlets Archives
Elay’s Network
Somali Week Festival at Broadway, Barking

A short teaser for the Mixed Reality experience can be watched below.

Beyond Forgetting 1938 / 2018

How do we meet and critically come to terms with memory, commemoration and often hidden histories, through artistic, pedagogical and performative means?

In August I travelled to Coburg, Germany to attend the International Beyond Forgetting Symposium.

I presented research related to Wunschendorf / Srbska, discussing the archive and the film and immersive works inspired by it.

Nothing From Nothing Residency

It’s been an amazing experience to co-organise and participant in ‘Nothing from Nothing‘, a fleeting, collaborative residency at LIMBO, Margate.

Inspired by the extensive revisions, suggestions and edits made by Ezra Pound to T.S. Eliot’s manuscript of The Waste Land, Nothing from Nothing was a fleeting, collaborative residency examining editing as a creative process. Over the course of one weekend in April 2018, ten professional artists came together in Margate, the area where Eliot himself found inspiration for the seminal poem.

It was a real privilege to attend iDocs this year and speak about my work.

I touched upon my work at the Netherlands Film Academy and bridged to more recent experimentation combining cultural heritage and Mixed Reality.

Thanks to Robin Kwong for writing up some notes from the day here

Over the past two years I’ve been doing an MA at the Netherlands Film Academy. It’s been an incredible opportunity to ask questions, experiment and build a body of research.

Our graduation show is taking place at the EYE museum Amsterdam. I’ll be presenting a number of live demonstrations of my Mixed Reality installation (in progress) The Chorus – built in the Microsoft HoloLens.
