Room-scale Virtual Reality

Memory of Loci uses stories and objects from the online collection, srbska.org and was developed during a Research Master’s at the Netherlands Film Academy, Amsterdam.

Mrs Jiraková refuses to return to her childhood home after a traumatic incident. Over the years the house has fallen to ruin but how does it exist in memory and in turn, how can the viewer enter into it?

This experiment started with an interview in which Mrs Jiraková was asked to imagine she was standing at the front door of her childhood home and to walk through it, describing her memories of the house in the process.

The spaces in the house which she remembered were recreated, leaving the black spaces to visualise the selective nature of her memory. Using the HTC Vive the viewer can freely move within the house, encountering her story and interacting with video, audio and images which relate to it.
